2021 Third Beach Summer Naturalist/Aquarist

Job Description

General Description: Norman Bird Sanctuary is seeking a seasonal Third Beach Summer Naturalist/Aquarist to develop and deliver marine and coastal educational programs for our Summer Camp program. Naturalist/Aquarist-led programs include but are not limited to: seining; beach, dune and marsh explorations; and dissections. This position requires working collaboratively with Summer Teacher/Naturalists to make sure beach programs match weekly and daily themes for each camp group. Campers range in age from 3.5 to 13 years old, and all applicants should be comfortable working with multiple age groups each day. The Third Beach Summer Naturalist/Aquarist is responsible for the set-up, care, and end of summer cleanup of saltwater aquaria. Contract begins June 21st and runs through August 20th and includes one week of staff training.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and assist in the delivery of marine and coastal educational programs for the Summer Camp program at NBS
  • Work collaboratively with Summer Teacher/Naturalists to plan and teach
  • Set-up, maintenance, and end of season clean-up of saltwater aquaria and associated materials
  • Track and report marine fish and invertebrate species caught and housed at Third Beach Education Center
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or work towards a degree in marine science, biology, or an environmental focus
  • Experience working with/caring for and identifying marine animals
  • Comfortable working with campers ages 3.5 to 13 years old
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, walk several miles, and lift medium-weight objects
  • Must pass a background check prior to hire
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred

COMPENSATION: Competitive wages based upon experience and position. Contract is 9 weeks, beginning June 21st through August 20th.
