Location: Capitol Reef National Park, Fruita, Utah
Housing provided: Yes (private room in shared dorm residence)
Transportation: Provided for work related activities, and not available otherwise. Reliable transportation for personal use is required as the Park is in a rural and remote area.

Position Description:
Come spend your summer at Capitol Reef National Park. (Capitol Reef National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) Visitation to the park is rapidly increasing, and the park is collecting data to inform visitor use planning, to ensure that we can continue to provide a notable visitor experience while protecting park resources, including amazing geology, historic orchards and desert riparian ecosystems.
The Visitor Use Data Technician works in the Resource Management and Science Division of Capitol Reef National Park. The data technician works closely with the park’s outdoor recreation planner on research to understand visitor use patterns and behaviors, visitor experience, and visitor impacts on natural and cultural resources. The technician will also have an opportunity to work with others in the resource division on whatever projects need an extra hand, from graffiti removal to range improvement projects.
There are 3 major duties of this position:
- Continue ongoing data collection efforts, including maintaining and monitoring devices including trail and traffic counters, door counters and cameras utilized for parking lot data collection.
- Provide assistance on data needs related to park visitor use planning, as they arise. This may include calibrating methods and equipment in the field (counting people and cars)
- Data entry and analysis of historical wilderness permits. Data management to ensure data sets are well organized, clearly labeled, and easily accessible.
Position Requirements and Preferences:
Knowledge and/or experience with concepts, methodologies, and scientific literature related to social and psychological science, outdoor recreation, and visitor use management are preferred. Knowledge of data collection devices including traffic counters, trail counters, and GPS/GIS equipment would be useful. Knowledge of and skills in performing basic data management and analysis using software such as Excel, Access, SPSS, R or similar is required. Office work will be conducted in a multi-disciplinary, busy setting with long periods of computer work requiring concentration. Field work will be conducted in varied weather conditions, including periods of high temperatures greater than 90 degrees and potential inclement weather. Applicants must be comfortable with hiking, driving in rough road conditions, and being outside for extended timeframes while conducting studies and operating research instruments. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
