I’ve been doing vegetation ecology through a partnership between Southwest Conservation Corps and the Bureau of Land Management, and we just posted our veg monitoring positions for the 2024 field season! We run 3-person crews that implement the Bureau’s Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program across a large portion of Colorado and all of New Mexico.
I’ve really loved doing AIM work, and it’s a great opportunity for anyone interested in plant science, ecology, or federal land management. Since AIM is a national program, our methods are applicable across the entire country (especially the western US). I particularly recommend my own Uncompahgre Field Office in Colorado — we have a highly experienced supervisor who runs exciting supplemental projects in addition to the core AIM protocols.
We’re definitely open to recent graduates and folks with less field science/outdoor experience! We accept current students, too, though it can be a little tricky because our field season overlaps with both semesters.
See below for the links to currently open positions. The sooner people apply the better, but sometimes positions open up as late as May or June. Folks are welcome to reach out to me if they have questions!
Hope you’re well,
Henry Newell
