Legal Internship

CRWA seeks a Summer Legal Intern who will work directly with CRWA’s Deputy Director of Advocacy, as well as with other CRWA staff and volunteers, to advocate for the protection of the Charles River watershed. The Legal Intern will provide support for the organization’s legal and policy work by:

  • conducting original research on environmental topics;

  • drafting legal memoranda communicating research findings and legal conclusions;

  • drafting other documents such as comment letters, briefs, and research papers;

  • participating in internal meetings, strategy sessions, and other aspects of case or project management;

  • attending external meetings, including meetings with government officials and other environmental advocacy groups; and

  • drafting testimony and/or testifying on behalf of CRWA at hearings or other government meetings.

This internship presents a unique opportunity to gain environmental advocacy experience at the federal, state, and local levels and observe/shadow all aspects of public interest legal practice.

Skills Gained:

  • The Legal Intern will gain experience in the practice of law at a non-profit environmental advocacy organization.

  • Specific skills gained include legal research and writing skills, written and oral advocacy skills, and familiarity with the day-to-day work of advocacy and policy in this field.

  • The Legal Intern will also gain some experience in other aspects of CRWA’s work and learn more about current CRWA projects.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Rising 2L or 3L with an interest in clean water, environmental justice, and/or climate resilience issues. Undergraduate coursework in an environmental or related field is a plus.

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to think both critically and creatively about challenges.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks/projects at the same time.

  • Willingness to learn, flexibility, and ability to work independently.

Internship Details:

  • This internship is open to current law students.

  • This internship is unpaid, so the Legal Intern will be expected to secure funding through their law school or another outside funding source.

  • Internship schedules are flexible within normal business hours.

  • This is a full-time, 10-week internship.

  • This internship may be fully remote, or the intern may work out of CRWA’s Boston office several days per week. CRWA is currently operating on a hybrid remote and in-person work schedule.
