Family & Youth Education Intern (May through August 2015)

Term: 12-15 weeks

Location: Newburyport, MA

Sanctuary: Joppa Flats Education Center

 

The Family & Youth Education Interns (FYI) will spend the part of their internship assisting with the implementation and development of ecology-based programs onsite for in-school and out of school and for family programs on some weekends.  Program themes may include coastal ecology, bird ecology, weather & wildlife, raptors and animal tracking. Interns will be encouraged to participate in training sessions on Tuesdays in January – schedule permitting. Interns will also focus their time on the care and maintenance of our 50 gallon cold marine aquarium which house live fish and intertidal invertebrates.

 

Responsibilities may include:

Assist with school, youth and family programs including schoolyard science, backyard study, birding trips, and drop-in weekend programs and public events.

Work with staff to design STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based activities for our drop-in family programs on weekends as well as craft stations and multi-media presentations around a central theme.

Maintain our 50- gallon cold marine aquarium tanks; care for and feed their inhabitants (coastal invertebrates and fish); perform necessary tank maintenance.

Mostly afternoons and some weekends.

 

Qualifications

At least 18 years of age

Valid driver’s license

Experience interacting with people of all ages, interests, and backgrounds

Demonstrates creativity, reliability, flexibility, and enthusiasm, and strong oral and written communication skills

Local knowledge of New England coastal ecology and bird species plus but not required

Experience leading teens in a team-like atmosphere

Experience with outdoor winter activities such as birding, tracking and using a compass

Experience with tank maintenance, animal care, and feeding (salt water preferred)

Must pass a background records check (CORI,SORI and driver’s)

 

This is an unpaid internship.
