Intern with Bike San Gabriel Valley (BikeSGV)
Located about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in El Monte, California, BikeSGV is a young
non-profit committed to creating a more bicycle-, pedestrian-, and transit-friendly San Gabriel Valley by:
● Educating the community about the many
benefits of biking, walking and using public
transit, including physical/mental health, air
quality, and personal finance.
● Partnering with community groups, non-profit
organizations, cities, and other parties to promote
multi-modal transportation planning.
● Developing strong working relationships with city
staff and government agencies to ensure that
local transportation policies and projects safely
accommodate people on foot, bike and transit.
● Supporting policies and legislation to increase
funding for people-friendly streets.
● Recognizing active transportation champions for their work (individuals, groups, cities, staff,
etc.)
● Organizing fun public events and activities to promote active transportation.
How can you help?
● Plan and organize BikeSGV community events,
activities, and demonstration projects
● Conduct community outreach in diverse
communities
● Research and collect pedestrian, bike and traffic
data
● Learn and help teach basic bike maintenance
● Help communities obtain funding to make biking
and walking safer
● Bring your talents, interests and ideas
Qualifications
● Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word,
PowerPoint, Google Docs
● Research skills
● Comfort working with diverse communities
● Public speaking skills
Preferred
● Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese speakers.
● Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
● Passion for public health, pedestrian/bike-friendly communities, and community organizing.
● Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including weekends and evenings, to accommodate
community meetings and special events.
● Willingness to utilize public and active transportation for commute and work-related activities. A
car is not required.
Summer Internships | General Information
Assistance in finding housing will be provided if needed. Interns will be provided with use of agency
bicycle(s) to utilize as a form of healthy, active transportation to travel to/from the office, meetings and
events. Interns will be supervised by the BikeSGV Program and Active Transportation Coordinators, and
have an opportunity to tailor their area(s) of focus with our organization based on their interests, skill
sets, and current project needs. Timeline is flexible, but generally within the May – September.
