McKinleyville Land Trust

The McKinleyville Land Trust is interested in having a summer intern to assist the all-volunteer board with a variety of tasks including:

  • updating and expanding the current mailing list,
  • developing volunteer lists,
  • updating records on existing properties,
  • developing website content and updating the website,
  • developing interpretive talks for our three properties,
  • converting key documents to electronic files,
  • assisting with required documentation for the Land Trust Alliance accreditation program,
  • coordinating and leading volunteer work days at properties.

 

The McKinleyville Land Trust is dedicated to the conservation of our local open spaces for their ecological, historical, agricultural, educational, recreational and scenic values. It was started in 1994 as a result of local residents’ response to the development of the Shopping Center in McKinleyville, CA and its potential impacts on the adjacent Mill Creek. The McKinleyville Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operated by an all-volunteer board of directors which relies on donations and fundraising to raise money to cover the cost of keeping its three parcels open to the public.

 

The dates of the internship are flexible depending on intern availability. We are looking for someone to spend 6–8 weeks with us sometime between 5 June and 11 August.

 

There are several options for affordable housing locally including renting a room from a board member and sub-leasing apartments from current students at Humboldt State University (located 10 miles south of McKinleyville). There is also the potential for on-campus housing at Humboldt State. We would love to work with the intern to determine what would best suit their needs. Public transportation in the area is limited – it is recommended that the intern have their own means of transportation.

 

 

 

McKinleyville is located in a scenic, remote area on the coast of Northern California approximately 5 hours north of San Francisco just north of the city of Eureka. The community has close ties to the surrounding environment including miles of wild, open coastline and preserves of ancient redwoods located just 20 miles north at Redwood National Park.
