Nature Weeks Environmental Educator
Frosty Drew Nature Center in Charlestown, Rhode Island
10-Week Seasonal Position June 18 – August 27, 2018
Scope of Work:
§ Assist in management of overall daily program content and structure of
Nature Weeks program – which runs 9:00 am – 3:00 pm Monday
through Friday, June 25 through August 24, 29018. Responsible for
planning, leading, and implementing core and non-core programs and
experiences for children aged 6-10 in a small group setting.
• Provides day-care for program participants before and after the Nature
Weeks program as needed from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and from 3:00 pm
– 5:00 pm. Ensures that each child is picked- up by authorized person.
• Supervise as many as 12 children on a daily basis with additional
environmental educator to maintain 6:1 ratio of children: adult.
• Work closely with Nature Weeks Director, program participants, and
families on a daily basis.
Background Needed:
§ Possesses knowledge of natural science subjects
§ Experience in environmental education
§ Experience in teaching children (background check required)
§ Experience teaching outdoors
§ Certified lifeguard a plus; current certification in Child First Aid and
CPR required
Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Help coordinate pre-summer planning and organization so that the
daily structure of Nature Weeks is arranged in advance and nature-
based themes are implemented. As part of daily program offerings,
guided play is encouraged through active exploration, discovery, and
curiosity with time for reflection and creating daily journals.
§ Help plan activities that give children the opportunity to participate in
activities that are both recreational, educational and nature based
§ Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment that
comes from mastering techniques and completing projects in a fun and
engaging way.
§ Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.
§ Plan activities that give children the opportunity to express themselves
creatively.
§ Enrichment activities consist of science, nature, environmental
education, creative arts, art and crafts.
§ Develop age appropriate activities that keep children active and help
them develop skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.
§ Plans and develops “hands-on, minds-on” environmental educational
activities for Nature Weeks program as needed.
§ Works with Nature Weeks director, Nature Center director and
program assistant, maintaining good communication.
§ Communicate with parents, community partners, and other outside
liaisons prior to and throughout the summer.
§ Monitor the health and safety of all campers.
§ Responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill
achievement of the participants in program.
§ Foster positive youth development.
§ Work closely with parents and families.
§ Serve as liaison with parents/guardians.
§ Model positive program participation and appropriate interaction with
children.
§ Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.
§ Works directly with children of all swim levels on a daily basis.
§ Direct and assist with all waterfront activities, including lifeguard duties
while seining and netting in ponds.
§ Monitor safety of children and staff in water and changing areas.
§ Work one-on-one with children who are having difficulty participating in
the program.
§ Ensures waivers and forms are completed for each program participant
and daily pick-ups of children are authorized.
§ Help children resolve conflicts appropriately.
§ Intervene if children are having significant behavior issues.
§ Help manage all medical issues and emergencies that occur on site.
§ Help manage all documentation relating to all medical occurrences.
§ Follow all RI Department of Health rules and regulations.
§ Create safety systems throughout the sites to prevent illness and
injury.
§ Help manage all medical supplies.
§ Help dispense medication and keep related records.
• Help monitor voicemail and calls from parents during Nature Weeks.
• Cares for live exhibits as needed.
• Purchases supplies as needed.
• Keeps Nature Center, Sky Theatre, office, restrooms, shed and
basement clean and in good working order
• Gains knowledge of Ninigret Park, Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, Frosty
Drew Nature Center & Observatory.
• Reports building /site issues as needed – sometimes this will be to the
Charlestown Parks and Rec Department if there are issues in Ninigret
Park.
