Radix Ecological Sustainability Center Internship Program

Location: Albany, New York

Dates: summer – flexible

Participants will have the unique opportunity to work with a cutting-edge urban environmental education center/micro-farm, and be engaged with the numerous ecological tools and technologies on site.  Participants will be able to work alongside of and learn from sustainability educators Scott Kellogg and Stacy Pettigrew, Radix’s founders.  The hours and days of the work-study are flexible, and can be planned accordingly to the student’s schedule.

Interns will have the opportunity to be engaged with, learning from and responsible for sustainability systems in the following areas:

  • local outreach – invite passersby in for a quick tour
  • Planning, construction, planting, irrigating, organic pest control, weeding, maintaining and harvesting from numerous raised bed gardens
  • operation of a recirculating aquaponics systems, where fish and plants are grown together
  • Care of urban microlivestock including chickens, ducks, and rabbits
  • Maintenance of a rainwater collection system used for irrigating vegetables
  • Composting, both in large outdoor piles and indoor worm, or vermicompost systems
  • Planning, organization, promotion, outreach, and carrying out of environmental educational programs for the local population of Albany, with a special focus on youth groups.
  • Assistance with managing the South End farmers market
  • Helping to run our “Ecojustice Summer” youth employment program
