Position Description:

The Greenway Conservancy is seeking a highly motivated and reliable individual for a full-time, paid summer position as a Programs Intern. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, young organization and learn the key skills required for planning and executing events both large and small in a premier public space.


The primary role of the Programs Intern is to assist the Programs Department in its daily operations, focusing on Community and Wellness. Responsibilities will include supporting The Greenway Fitness Program, community festivals, and data management for end of year reports.


This is a full-time, summer intern position from approximately mid-May to the end of August. There is a preference for the Programs Intern to continue event support during occasional nights and weekends through September 2020. The work schedule is typically Tuesday through Saturday and flexibility is required.


Millions of people visit The Greenway for dynamic events that include fitness classes, festivals, markets, food trucks, public art, and more! In 2019, The Greenway hosted over 450 events and programs, including the Boston Calling Block Parties at Dewey Square Park, NEMPAC Concert Series, FIGMENT, Chinatown Main Streets Festival, August Moon Festival, Free Fun Friday, Coolidge Movie Series, and the Boston Local Food Festival. The Programs Intern will assist in the organizing, execution, and monitoring of the Conservancy’s robust programming calendar.





The Programs Intern will work in multiple areas and be expected to:

  • Work outdoors, handle physical tasks, and conduct work with professionalism and compassion for everyone encountered.
  • Contribute to effective relationships with third-party vendors, organizations, and Greenway personnel.
  • Assist with the management of Greenway programs, such as the Greenway Fitness Program, Coolidge Movie Nights, and NEMPAC Concert series, ensuring partners adhere to the Park Use Guidelines, provide appropriate enforcement, assist with concerns, manage scheduling and layouts, and record issues in need of attention and report them to the Programs Manager.
  • Collaborate with Development team in creating content for end of year grant report.
  • Write a blog highlighting the summer programs for The Conservancy website.
  • Provide on-site support for The Greenway and third-party events, particularly during weekend festivals and fitness events, including set-up, support during the event, tear-down, and follow-up on event feedback.
  • Perform other assigned projects or duties as they relate to event execution and use of the parks such as:
    • Supporting the improvement of program or event management tools.
    • Supporting a project with a focus on data analysis.
    • Supporting partners and providing customer service by connecting via phone or email.
    • Researching new program content for 2021.
    • Managing partner schedules and layouts, and assisting in office tasks and administrative duties as needed.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Entry-level position for a person 18 years or older.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to routinely drive Conservancy van around downtown Boston. Van training will be provided.
  • Experience/interest in event planning, creative placemaking, sports management and/or the nonprofit sector a plus.
  • Demonstrated skill in:
    • Building and maintaining successful collaborations and partnerships;
    • Multitasking and attention to detail;
    • Written and oral communication;
    • Creative problem-solving and staying calm under pressure.
  • Computer proficiency, especially with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with Social Media and Marketing tools.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather, kneel or stand for periods of time, and be able to lift 50 pounds.



  • This is a paid position with sick time benefits. We are looking for assistance up to 40 hours per week with preference to candidates who are available full-time.
  • The position duration is ~15 weeks, beginning in May 2020, with preference to continue event support through September during occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Work hours are generally Tuesday through Saturday (including at least one evening shift, 1p-9p), but may fluctuate based on event needs and could lead to working both weekend days. A day off within the same week will be provided in return for any additional work days.
  • Work will generally take place outdoors, and the position will require a significant amount of time in the parks in all weather conditions. Indoor office time will also be part of the schedule.
  • We will work with interns to receive college credit if interested.
