ABOUT SOUTHEAST ALASKA LAND TRUST
The Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEAL Trust) is a private, non-profit
organization dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of Southeast
Alaska. SEAL Trust works to permanently protect and steward
important lands with natural, recreational, and cultural values.
Since 1995, the SEAL Trust Board of Directors and staff have
partnered with communities and willing landowners to ensure that vital
natural areas throughout Southeast Alaska remain in place for the
benefit of each generation. Today, SEAL Trust protects and stewards
nearly 3,400 acres throughout Southeast Alaska.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
SEAL Trust is seeking a Conservation Intern for the summer of 2015. This internship will provide practical, hands-on
experience with a non-profit conservation organization engaged in local and regional land conservation and stewardship
activities. The internship will provide the opportunity for direct field experience monitoring conservation easements,
assisting with baseline documentations reports, assisting with land acquisition projects, and engaging in community
outreach. Specific projects include:
Land Protection
– Assist staff with initial site research and documentation, including: on-site and in office land attribute analysis, GIS
mapping, and report writing
– Assist with SEAL Trust’s multi-year Community Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) Grant by participating in field
work to test wetland functional assessment tools, utilizing GPS and GIS mapping
Stewardship
– Assist staff with annual monitoring of conservation properties and Baseline Documentation Reports
Outreach
– Assist with effort to connect with community partner(s) for scientific and educational programs
– Assist with website, E-news, Facebook, and other community education and outreach activities
General
– Assist with general file and office organization
INTERN QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate or graduate student in a natural resource or related field, with ability to work independently, excellent
communication and computer skills, and field work experience. Experience with Trimble GPS equipment, ArcGIS desktop
software, and website design is desirable but not necessary.
DURATION
June 1, 2015 – August 2015, schedule is flexible depending on work availability
