The Democratic staff of the House Natural Resources Committee (HNRC) seeks an organized, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented Staff Assistant (SA). Candidates should be passionate about issues within the Natural Resources Committee’s jurisdiction, possess basic knowledge of the Committee process, have excellent time management and multitasking skills, and display an active willingness to learn.

The SA for the Democratic staff of the Natural Resources Committee oversees day to day administrative duties, carrying out miscellaneous projects for senior staff, corresponding with constituents, and serving as Intern Coordinator. The SA will work directly with the Counsel’s Office, the Director of Legislative Operations, and the Chief Clerk to track legislation, prepare for Committee meetings, and create reference materials for staff and Members of Congress.

Preferred qualifications: Candidate demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations. Understands how HNRC issues intersect with racism, economic and social inequality in the U.S. and has a passion for working to dismantle these systems. Contributes to recruiting, hiring, developing, and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Managing Committee correspondence via phone, mail, and email.
  • Hiring, training, and managing Committee interns, including assigning projects and overseeing professional development.
  • Compiling and maintaining reference materials for Committee Members, Members’ Legislative Assistants, and Committee staff.
  • Maintaining organizational documents and schedules to facilitate day-to-day administrative duties.
  • Regularly updating Committee Legislative Assistants with relevant news, schedule updates, and meeting information.
  • Coordinating with Member offices and handling outreach requests.
  • Assisting Policy Aides during hearings and helping draft, edit, and distribute memos as needed.
  • Miscellaneous additional projects assigned by Committee staff.

In office responsibilities (post-telework) also include:

  • Staffing front office reception and fielding all in-office visits.
  • Processing all incoming mail in an efficient manner.
  • Serving as Emergency Coordinator for all Committee staff.
  • Managing office maintenance, keeping supplies stocked, and coordinating room reservations.
  • Setting up for Committee meetings and assisting clean up.
  • Filling in for Subcommittee Policy Aides on an ad hoc basis.
  • Coordinating staff-wide events.

The position is based in Washington, D.C., although is currently remote. The SA will be expected to work in office when we resume normal operations. Policy Aide, Office of Insular Affairs – Majority Staff

The Democratic staff of the House Natural Resources Committee’s Office of Insular Affairs seeks a Policy Aide responsible for managing the logistics of hearings, providing administrative services to Members and staff, and assisting the Office team with legislative, oversight, outreach, and press projects. The position requires organizational, time management, verbal, and written communications skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The position also requires a firm commitment to the Committee’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals and the ability to take on Professional Staff-level tasks.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serving as the face of the Office by greeting visitors, taking calls, and scheduling meetings.
  • Contacting witnesses and managing their hearing materials.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing hearing memorandum.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing hearing questions.
  • Preparing Member binders and press packets.
  • Coordinating with Member offices.
  • Circulating all hearing materials to Member staff prior and after proceedings.
  • Preparing the Committee hearing room for proceedings.
  • Managing the administrative aspects of hearings.
  • Cleaning up the hearing room after proceedings.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing Office information for Committee bill reports.
  • Filing and archiving all materials from proceedings.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing Committee letters and document requests.
  • Coordinating schedules with the Chair and Office of Insular Affairs Vice Chair and the Chief Clerk.
  • Editing approved transcripts for final GPO print.
  • Assist the Chief Clerk during Full Committee Markups, as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with other Member offices, executive agencies, private, and non-profit sectors.
  • Coordinating with other Subcommittees, Offices, and the Full Committee, including the Communications team.
  • Assisting the Committee Staff Assistant with his or her duties.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing Member memorandum.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing Member speeches.
  • Drafting, editing, and/or organizing Member correspondence.
