The internship would be a good fit for a student with an interest in state and federal policy regarding transportation and greenhouse gas emission mitigation in a rural context and transportation sector climate change adaptation. We are able to work with the student to identify a topic that’s of interest to them and will benefit the agency. The student would need to seek housing in the Montpelier VT area. There is also convenient daily bus service from the Burlington area.
Here is a description of the internship:
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) interns conduct research and assist in planning activities to support VTrans’ climate change and energy planning and climate change adaptation work being undertaken in coordination with the state of Vermont’s Climate Cabinet. Topics include:
· Transportation energy data sources and consumption trends in Vermont
· Transportation and greenhouse gas emissions planning
· Research, planning and initiatives to increase electric vehicles on VT roadways
· Water quality and Vermont roadways
· VTrans flood resilience planning
Examples of tasks to be undertaken by the intern:
· Report writing
· Data gathering and analyses
· Literature searches and other basic research activities
· Tracking state and federal legislative activity
· Preparing presentations and information for the general public
· Facilitating collaboration among stakeholders such as organizing meetings, preparing agendas, taking notes
The successful candidate will be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an environmental- related field and excellent writing and communication skills. Knowledge of federal and state transportation policy is preferred.
