Williamstown Agricultural Positions: Farmers Market Assistant & Agricultural Research (these positions can be combined for one full-time position, or can be two separate half-time positions)
Williamstown Farmers Market assistant: 8 weeks, half-time (with option to share with an Agricultural Research Position) for one full-time position
The intern will serve as an assistant at the Williamstown Farmers Market (WFM). The Williamstown Farmers Market is in the center of a local food system which includes local farm products, small business models, support of the area’s local farms and food insecure population, and education and outreach related to the importance of local farmers and food producers, local food distribution, “root to leaf” product use, soil health, and sustainable farm and food practices.
This internship will include assisting at the weekly farmers market and its programs related to food insecurity, and learning about local food production, composting, and best practices related to storing and preparing food to reduce food waste and save money. Specific tasks include interacting with vendors and customers, staffing the market information booth, assisting with safety protocols, and updating the market’s Facebook page, website, and Instagram posts.
Agricultural Research Position: 8 weeks, half-time (option to share position with Williamstown Farmers Market position (also half-time) for one full time position.
The agricultural research assistant will support Massachusetts-based agricultural research projects focused on farming and farmland. The work will include collecting, compiling and organizing quantitative and qualitative data, creating graphic images to present findings, conducting research, and writing results. The research may also include conducting interviews (phone or in-person) and attending meetings.
The research assistant will work under the guidance of Sarah Gardner. Seeking a student with a strong interest in New England agriculture, good organizational skills, the ability to make cold calls and connect with a range of people, and someone with the ability to sift through information and write clear summaries. The student will have regular contact with Professor Gardner but should also have the ability to work independently.
