Pownal: Pownal is a small rural community (pop. 3,400) situated in the beautiful Hoosic Valley between Williamstown, MA and Bennington, VT. The Town is comprised of four ‘villages’: North Pownal, East Pownal, Pownal Center and Pownal Village, each with its own distinctive features. A bedroom community for Bennington and Williamstown and beyond, Pownal’s economy is based on family-owned farms, local arts/craft businesses and independent contractors of all kinds.
Pownal is rich in history and natural beauty. Many families came to Pownal when they were moving across the country after immigrating from Europe. Some stayed for a short period of time; others permanently settled in Pownal – some of their descendants still live in Pownal, working their family farms. Two U.S. Presidents, James Garfield and Chester Arthur, taught school in North Pownal. And Gilded Age railroad tycoon Jim Fisk was born in Pownal. In 1946 the brand new United Nations featured Pownal Center as “a picture of peace” on its Weekly Bulletin.
