Berkshire Natural Resources Council

Williams Summer Intern Position Description

The Berkshire Natural Resources Council, a private, non-profit land trust based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is offering an outdoor-recreation internship to a Williams Summer Intern who is exploring a career in the environmental field.  The internship dates are June 1 to August 1, with flexibility on both ends.  Most activity will be in northern Berkshire County.  Some travel to central Berkshire County will be required.

The intern will gain valuable experience in conservation stewardship at a successful environmental organization while performing meaningful outreach and education in the Berkshires.  The position will enjoy an unusual level of independence compared to many internships; a large amount of self-motivation is required.

The intern will mostly work on BNRC’s Hoosac Range Reserve.  The main task will be producing interpretive signage at the Reserve.  The Hoosac Range trail is a 2.7-mile one-way trail in North Adams, MA.  The majority of the trail runs along a ridgeline, offering great views of North Adams, Mt. Greylock, and the Hoosic Valley.  The property includes high elevation beaver ponds, vernal pools, glacial erratics, geologic formations, and lies atop the historic Hoosac Tunnel.

Other tasks will include educating users about BNRC and Leave No Trace principles along with planning and leading outreach events.  The intern may also help with trail maintenance, checking/maintaining boundaries and mapping trails and other features.
