Grassland Bird Intern

Location: Western Massachusetts

 

Position Summary:

 

The Trustees is seeking qualified individual to assist with monitoring, research, and management activities for grasslands throughout western Massachusetts.  The Grassland Bird Intern is part of the Ecology Program team, responsible for the stewardship of natural resources on Trustees properties. The focus of this internship is on monitoring grassland birds and documenting key vegetation characteristics within grassland bird habitats.

 

The Grassland Bird Intern will travel throughout western Massachusetts, visiting Trustees properties that support grassland birds.

 

Workplan:

 

  • Conduct avian point count surveys for grassland nesting birds
  • Monitor and map invasive species where applicable
  • Conduct vegetation surveys
  • Map and enter data into database
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

 

May – July (12 weeks): 30 hrs/week = 360 hours

 

Qualifications:

  • Coursework in ornithology, botany, ecology, environmental science, or related field
  • The ability to identify birds by sight and sound, specifically grassland birds (bobolinks, meadow larks and savannah sparrows)
  • Strongly motivated towards a career in wildlife, ecology and/or ecological management
  • Good physical fitness and outdoor experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong natural history knowledge and willingness to learn more
  • GIS mapping skills preferred
  • Applicants must provide their own transportation to job sites, mileage will be reimbursed
