Williamstown Farms, past and present
This 9-week internship includes working at the Williamstown Farmers Market 1 day a week and conducting local farm research: oral histories, interviews, and archival research on several generational farms in Williamstown four days of the week.
This internship will combine work at the Williamstown Farmers Market each Saturday and with some mid-week duties, such as social media. The oral history work will document several of Williamstown’s historic farms and farm families, with a chance to learn first hand about land and history of several of Williamstown’s oldest farms. Interviews, photographs and delving into Williamstown’s history will comprise the majority of the internship.
Much of the farmland in Williamstown has been in the same family’s ownership for many generations. How have these farms survived the agricultural changes and how has today’s local agricultural landscape endured? The deliverable will be short articles with photos on the selected farms, as well as valuable insight into the farm business and food insecurity through work at the farmers market. The work will be uploaded to a website.
For the Farmers Market work, the intern will be supervised by the Farmers Market Manager, for the oral histories and research, the intern will be supervised by Leslie Reed Evans and Sarah Gardner.
