Mass Audubon’s mission is to protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and for wildlife. Mass Audubon protects 36,500 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all. As Massachusetts’ largest nature conservation nonprofit, we welcome more than a half million visitors a year to our wildlife sanctuaries and 20 nature centers. Our Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries include—Pleasant Valley in Lenox, Tracy Brook in Richmond, Canoe Meadows in Pittsfield, and Lime Kiln Farm in Sheffield. Combined, these offer 1,676 acres of varied habitats and twelve miles of trails that welcome over 20,000 visitors annually for nature education and recreation including hiking and snowshoeing.
Education and Visitor Services Intern
Mass Audubon seeks an energetic, organized and team-oriented intern based at our Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Lenox, MA, for a minimum of 15 hours per week over a 12-15 week period. The intern will support ongoing efforts of Mass Audubon in the areas of environmental education and visitor services. Duties will include greeting visitors and assisting with education programs for children, adults, and families such as guided walks, canoe trips, etc. Position may also include native and invasive plant management, organizing library and equipment resources, and office work. To some extent the position can be customized based upon the interests/skills of the intern and may include a variety of duties in the areas of environmental education and visitor services, wildlife and plant conservation, or land management and stewardship.
Qualifications: Strong interest and educational background in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental education, conservation, biology, botany, wildlife, natural resources, or related field. Applicants should be outgoing and have strong communication skills. Requirements include strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, creativity, self-motivation, sense of humor, ability to manage diverse tasks, and willingness to learn. Candidates should be comfortable working independently as well as part of the Sanctuary team. Must have reliable transportation to get themselves to work sites. CPR/First Aid certification, and proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher) desired. Successful candidates must pass a background record check (CORI, SORI and driver’s record). Experience in teaching and/or working with children and teens desired for some roles.
Benefits: This is a 15-25 hour/week unpaid educational internship. Opportunities may be available to receive school credit. No housing provided.
